The Return of Vermouth
It has spanned centuries, trends and borders without ever losing its charm: Vermouth, one of the symbols of Italian drinking culture, has recently been enjoying a renaissance, returning to its status as one of the undisputed stars of the Italian aperitif. Whether served neat, on the rocks with a twist of orange, or mixed, Vermouth has reclaimed its place of honour as the king of mixology, as confirmed by the sell-out analysis for the hospitality sector compiled by Data Warehouse of the CDA consortium, which forecasts Vermouth’s growth by 2025 at +9.39% in value and +10.41% in volume.
Flavoured wine is Proposta Spirits’ big bet for 2026: an increasingly cross-generational product that speaks to tradition for consumers over 50, whilst, when served with tonic water, it becomes an appealing cocktail for younger drinkers, who are far more drawn to mixology than to wine. For this reason, to mark World Vermouth Day, celebrated worldwide on 21 March, we have selected ten labels from our catalogue that perfectly illustrate Vermouth’s ability to reinvent itself and remain contemporary without losing touch with its origins.
PIEMONTE
DORAGROSSA, VERMOUTH DI TORINO SUPERIORE ROSSO BAROLO
A mosaic of aromas – spices, flowers, fruits, berries, roots, leaves, woods and seeds – each leaving its own unique and ever-changing mark, shaped by the terroir, the weather and the seasons. Doragrossa’s Vermouth di Torino Superiore Rosso Barolo (a producer paying homage to the art of liqueur-making in the city of the Mole) is characterised by an absolute harmony of ingredients that respects ancient and simple principles, allowing tradition, nature and time to express themselves to the full. By uniting the character of Nebbiolo and Barolo with the poetry of botanicals in a single breath, Doragrossa has created an infinite interplay of aromas, colours and flavours; an aromatic and vinous blend, refined and balanced, which continually evolves once poured into the glass. The wine’s structure meets the bitter notes of absinthe, cinchona and gentian, and is enhanced by the fresh, citrusy notes of orange and angelica, with hints of cloves and red berries. On the finish, the silky astringency of the tannins and the moderate acidity prolong the pleasure and invite you to take another sip.
PODERI COLLA, VERMOUTH DI TORINO BONMÉ
A vermouth made from Moscato grape must, to which ultra-pure alcohol is added to prevent alcoholic fermentation: in this way, it is the grapes’ natural sugar that gives it its sweetness, whilst preserving all its aromatic intensity. The Colla family’s ancient recipe also involves the separate infusion of around ten botanical ingredients in alcohol; when added to the Moscato, these give rise to Bonmé (which means ‘absinthe’ in the Piedmontese dialect), a Vermouth characterised by the perfect balance between the sweetness of the grapes and the intensely fragrant bitterness of the extract. Ideal as an aperitif and at the end of a meal, paired with dry biscuits and desserts made with dark chocolate, it is surprisingly pleasant with strong and pungent cheeses (such as plain Gorgonzola) or those flavoured with herbs and spices.
FRIULI VENEZIA GIULIA
SERI PERVAS, VERMUT
From Trieste comes Seri Pervas Vermouth, a project created to pay homage to the region and the city’s commercial and trading heritage. Local ingredients and artisanal production are the hallmarks of this brand, which are also evident in the Vermouth made with Istrian Malvasia, Istrian Terrano, wormwood, rhubarb and herbs from the Karst. On the nose, the vinous notes of Malvasia and Terrano are beautifully complemented by the warmer notes of savory, rhubarb and cinchona bark, balanced by the fresher notes of chinotto and sage. On the palate, the initial sweet impact is immediately offset by the roundness of rhubarb and the herbaceous, bitter notes of wormwood and dandelion, combined with the earthier notes of gentian, whilst the finish features warm notes of elderflower and spicy notes of savory. Ideal from aperitif to the end of the meal.
EMILIA ROMAGNA
PALTRINIERI, VERMOUTH VERSO
The first Lambrusco di Sorbara Vermouth is the result of the innovative and experimental spirit of Paltrinieri, a Modena-based winery with a century of history. Made from their Leclisse rosé Lambrusco with the addition of roots, fruits and natural spice aromas, this Vermouth stands out for its bright pink colour and its delicate, very clean taste: the acidity and fruity notes of the Lambrusco support the alcohol content and enhance the herbal notes of the liqueur component, achieving a perfect balance between freshness and aroma. A Vermouth designed to be enjoyed on its own, chilled or with ice, but also excellent for the most sophisticated cocktails.
TOSCANA
OPIFICIO NUNQUAM, VERMOUTH BIANCO DI PRATO
Prato White Vermouth has its roots in ancient rural traditions: made by housewives using unripe white grapes and herbs gathered from the fields, it was served as an aperitif or digestif during the Christmas festivities. The production process is still carried out entirely by hand today, following the ancient recipe dating from 1750: aromatic herbs, wild medicinal plants and spices such as Enula campana, gentian, galangal, cinnamon, sweet flag, cloves, centaury, Pontic and Roman wormwood, coriander, nutmeg, and the peel of sweet and bitter lemons and oranges are left to macerate in an excellent Tuscan white wine. The result is a Vermouth with a deep yellow, slightly amber colour, a sweetish flavour with a hint of acidity and a pleasantly bitter aftertaste, accompanied by a very intense, spicy and fruity aroma. Best served chilled as an aperitif, at the end of a meal with biscuits, but also with chocolate or mild blue cheeses.
GIOCHI DI SPIAGGIA, VERMOUTH ROSSO
Creating spirits capable of describing the area without losing lightheartedness is the goal behind the Beach Games, a Tuscan organization dedicated to the production of artisanal liqueur. Among its references, Vermouth Rosso stands out, obtained from Tuscan wine, Mediterranean scrub botanicals, spices and citrus peels. Soft and balsamic, it tells the story of the Mediterranean scrub with balance and great drinkability: perfect on its own with ice or a splash of selz, it is ideal for a Negroni, an Americano or as an after-dinner dessert, perhaps paired with a shortcrust pastry or tiramisu.
MARCHE
PODERI SAN LAZZARO, VERMOUTH DI OFFIDA
In the heart of Rosso Piceno Superiore, between the Adriatic and the Apennines, Poderi San Lazzaro produces a Vermouth by vinifying Grenache grapes from the Offida vineyards in rosé. Brick pink in color, it opens to the nose with strong notes of gentian, rhubarb and orange peels, while in the mouth it is very impactful: warm and harmonious with a perfect balance between the bittering and the sweeter part. The freshness supports the sip, balancing it excellently. An elegant and refined after-dinner.
SICILIA
ETNA TWIST, ETNA VERMOUTH
A vintage Italian with a Mediterranean sapoer, a delicate blend of chamomile flowers and orange peel: Etna Vermouth is intense, rich and complex, with pleasant spicy touches and delicate herbaceous notes (chamomile and licorice above all), perfectly balanced by a bitter aftertaste. Velvety and enveloping on the palate, it presents an intensity and a persistent aromaticity, with a bitter note on the finish, typical of ripe orange peel, in perfect balance with the sensation of sweetness. Perfect for twisting iconic cocktails, from Americano to Negroni, from Boulevardier to Martinez.
GERMANIA
FERDINAND'S, VERMOUTH DRY
Ferdinand's Dry Vermouth originates in the Saar region, home to some of the most renowned Rieslings: the wide, south-facing slope of the Saarburger Rausch, its rugged Devonian shale terrain, and cool climate form the perfect base for this Vermouth. Twelve selected botanicals, including wormwood, lovage, and home-grown vineyard onion, are joined by a vintage Riesling Grand Cru: the result is a product with both floral and spicy character, with notes of regional herbs and flowers, offering a supreme drinking pleasure.
SPAGNA
DOS DEUS, HADES RED SMOKED VERMOUTH
A unique smoked vermouth on the market: Hades Red Smoked Vermouth by Dos Deus, a Spanish brand in the heart of Priorat that has made innovation its signature style, is inspired by Islay whiskies, which use peat to smoke malt, and American bourbon refined in extra-roasted barrels. A Vermouth made from Mababeo, Xarello, and Parellada grapes, striking with unprecedented aromatic complexity: elegantly intense and structured, it boasts a great balance between its 17 characteristic herbs and spices (nutmeg, cloves, cumin, and orange peel in particular) and the floral notes of wood and smoke. The finish is vibrant and fresh, long, very sweet, herbaceous and spicy.
